Course Details: 

BTEC Awards are different from GCSEs in several ways. They are vocationally related qualifications, where learners develop knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and kills in a work-related context.  The engage learners to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day work place.  These skills include; team working, working to portfolio deadlines and presenting information effectively.  BTEC Health & Social Care motivates learners, and opens doors to progress into further study and responsibility within the workplace.  

 

Assessment:

Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of diverse activities, including assignment and project work, case studies, role play, film and presentations. 

At least 25% of the course will be assessed by an external assessor. The rest of the course will be assessed internally. Assessment grades differ from traditional GCSE grades but have the same weighting. 

 BTEC grading is as follows;

  • Merit
  • Pass
  • Level 1
  • Unclassified 


What next?

Students usually go on to study A-Levels if they have completed the course with a Merit. The course also provides opportunities for learners to progress into careers in the health and social care settings including, nursing, teaching, child care, physiotherapy, social worker, counselling and many more.

Unit 1:

Human Lifespan Development

This unit provides you with the opportunity to explore how we grow and develop throughout our lives and to investigate the factors that affect this growth and development. You will go on to consider how these factors are interrelated.

Unit 2:

Health and Social Care Values

Care values apply to all areas of health and social care work. In this unit you will gain an understanding of how these care values are applied in health and social care settings, and their importance to work in the sector. You will apply these values in practice. Through this activity you will develop skills that will be of use in all careers in the health and social care sector. The values described in this unit may be applied to daily life, and to a variety of careers outside the health and social care sector.

Unit 3: Communication in HSC settings

This unit will allow you to investigate the different forms of communication and how they are used effectively in health and social care. You will look at the importance of

using clear speech, body language that shows that you want to help people, and active listening skills that show you are interested in what people are saying. This

unit will also provide information about alternative forms of communication such as Braille, British Sign Language and Makaton. In this unit, you will also investigate the difficulties some people experience in accessing health and social care, owing to barriers of communication. You will learn how these can be overcome, so that people can access health and social care services.

Unit 4:

 Impact of Diet on Health

In this unit you will explore what is meant by a balanced diet and its effects on the body, for example in raising immunity to infection and improving concentration.

You will also explore what is meant by an unbalanced diet and how this may lead to various types of ill health. The knowledge and understanding you will gain in this unit is essential for a career in health and social care as it will help you support individuals to make the right choices to improve their health and wellbeing.

In this unit, you will explore the nutritional needs of individuals at different stages of their lives. You will also learn more about the specific diets that some individuals

need, for example individuals with allergies or other particular dietary needs. This unit will also enable you to understand some of the personal preferences individuals may have with regard to their diet. You will apply this knowledge and understanding to create nutritional plans for individuals with special dietary needs, which will develop your nutritional planning skills.
