Careers Education is an integral part of provision for all students at NLS.

The school's Careers lead – Mrs S Kavanagh, ensures careers provision and education integrated through the curriculum to encourage our students to develop an understanding of themselves, their strengths and skills to assist them in their future choices on leaving school.

Mrs C Wheeler, the Careers Co-ordinator and Advisor provides specialist careers and higher education support and guidance within school.

Mrs Wheeler is available for interviews with students in Year 8-13. Students are given the opportunity to have an individual interview to discuss their options. Parents are well to attend if they wish.

All students in Key Stage 3-5 access a range of career related activities through our termly ACD (Alternative Curriculum Days). These can be activities which promote self awareness and decision making, finding out about different job sectors and careers using our careers profiling software Fast Tomato or career carousel events involving our local business community

External speakers from universities and employers enrich the programme and inform students of the opportunities available to them. Each November we hold a careers fair where students have the opportunity to find out about different careers and study options. We invite universities, FE Colleges and local businesses and apprenticeship providers along to this event

Y8 students can access support from our Careers Adviser to help with their option choices for GCSE, as well as participate in a ‘Guess my Job’ event. Which helps our Students understand about different job roles and actually what these jobs involve.

All students in year 10 and year 12 undertake a one week work placement which gives them an excellent insight into the world of work.

All Year 11 students participate in Mock Interview Day where they have a practice interview with an external employer

Employer visits and industry led activities take place within the curriculum and enhance individual subject areas.

Whilst a large number of our Year 11 students move into the sixth form, we ensure we help them explore the different post 16 opportunities .Every student in Year 11 has either a 1 to 1 guidance interview with a qualified careers adviser or can access a workshop on how to make A’level choices or Apprenticeships.

Local apprenticeship and job opportunities are promoted within the careers section on the school portal within the careers section are regularly updated with the latest vacancies

Year 13 and 13 receive further help and advice through ACD. This includes talks from external speakers representing universities and employers with lessons on employability skills and preparation for higher education. 6th formers can also make appointments with our Careers Adviser to discuss post 16 options including universities, gap years and apprenticeships.
