In Year 8 you will start to think about and choose the subjects you wish to study to GCSE. This is an important time for you but there is lots of support in school to help you make the right decision.

If you have any questions please speak to your subject tutors, learning mentors or contact the school's careers advisor in C0.44. You can also email her at

 Where do I start?

  • If you have a clear idea about what you want to do when you leave school then you may need to study certain subjects or qualifications for some careers. Find out which qualifications and subjects will help you reach your goal. Use the websites listed below, speak to your subject tutors or visit the school’s careers advisor.
  • If you don’t know what you want to do in the future please do not worry. Choose a broad range of subjects that will help you to keep your options open. Even if you do know what job you want to do in the future, it’s OK to change your mind over the next few years. The subjects you pick don’t have to relate to a specific job. It’s fine to choose some simply because you enjoy them or are good at them.

  • If you are considering staying on to do A-Levels most A-Level subjects will require you to have a GCSE at a particular grade in that subject. Speak to your subject tutors about what may be required.

  • If you are thinking about doing a degree, very few insist that you have a particular GCSE choice that does not form part of the Core subjects that you must study (English, Maths, Science and RE). Some degree courses may require you to achieve a certain grade at GCSE (A-C).

The school has invested in some profiling software called Fast Tomato. Many of you have already used it in school to help you think about your preferences and strengths as well as suggesting some careers that may be suited to you.

This can be accessed at home by logging on to

You then need to enter the following code depending on which college you are in:

NLCLMR if you are in Manor

NLCLPK if you are in Park

NLCLCT if you are in Croft

NLCLBW if you are in Binswood

NLCLBD if you are in Blackdown
